Desert Hot Springs Hotel, Desert Hot Springs, CA
CLIENT: undisclosed
“The iconic desert hideaway built by legendary architect John Lautner in 1947 is re-imagined today as Hotel Lautner, a stunning modern day oasis in Desert Hot Springs, California.”
At one point this property was for sale and there was concern within the preservation community on whether the property would survive. I developed this concept for a potential buyer. It was created to show that the adjacent property (also included in the sale) could be put to use as a spa facility to make it more financially viable business proposition.
The concept perfectly complimented Lautner’s original buildings. The first sketch shows the imposition of original property layout in relation to neighbors and the concept of the add-on.
The proposed addition would include post and beam “L” shaped structure with swimming pool mimicking the layout of Lautner’s iconic motel rooms.
The property has since been purchased and lovingly restored by Los Angeles based interior designer Tracy Beckmann of Tracy Beckman Design and furniture designer Ryan Trowbridge of Brown + Trowbridge.
