Background and Highlights
Atomic: In chemistry, existing as free, uncombined atoms. (also in reference to the Atomic Age era of style)
Colony: Any group of individuals having similar interests, occupations, etc., usually living in a particular locality or community, i.e. a colony of artists. The district, quarter, or dwellings inhabited by any such number or group.
The Atomic Colony of Futura House was founded by Mary-Margaret Stratton who turned her passion for historic preservation into a design consulting career. Mary-Margaret (nicknamed m&m or anand for short) was a Senior Creative Director who coined the phrase (now in common use) “MidMod” through her national online message board for fans of Modern architecture, LottaLiving.com.
Mary-Margaret (and her former husband partner) bought their first 1955 Edward Fickett designed ranch home in the San Fernando Valley in the early 1990s. They were forced to learn how to do hands-on home restoration after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake shook up their home fairly well. The quake was epi-centered one mile from their home!
